Steve Kilbey is the bassist, lead singer and songwriter for Australian band The Church.

Usually considered an alternative band since the early 80’s, The Church were deservedly acknowledged for their contribution to music by being inducted into the Aria Hall of Fame in 2010. They have always stayed true to their unique sound, regardless of the pressure of the music industry in the early years to compromise. They have recorded over 25 studio albums.

I have been a fan of their music since the early 80’s and have seen The Church play many times over the years. I painted this portrait of Steve Kilbey from a photo I took in 2016 at The Triffid in Brisbane. I chose to paint Steve wearing a paisley shirt because it was a look the band had adopted in their early years.

Steve Kilbey is a creative individual who is a brilliant bass player, songwriter and artist. His portraits using irridescent pastels are unique and there is much to be inspired by. I also appreciate his authenticity, sense of humour and ability to laugh at himself. I painted his portrait in gratitude for the sense of well-being that good music can bring and wanted to convey that feeling in my painting. Anecdotally, I met my husband, who is a musician, while seeing the Church play live in 1986, and we have lived happily ever after.
